Great game, but it can strain systems

World In Conflict
Platform: PC
The fear of a war between Russia and the United States has spawned movies, books, and video games.
For many of us the Cold War provided a backdrop to our youths, so we understand the fear of a war between two super powers. World In Conflict provides a fictional take on how the Cold War could have erupted into a Third World War.
The game begins with several massive cargo transport carriers coming into port along America’s expansive coast. The ships’ containers open to reveal Russian troops which immediately attack the local authorities. America’s military machine kicks into high gear to defend its borders but the damage is done; Russia has won a foothold on American soil and is bringing in even more troops and equipment.
World In Conflict takes this setting and creates an action-packed game that allows the player to defend America’s borders against an invasion. The game plays like a real-time strategy game with a fully-adjustable third-person perspective.
There is no resource gathering in this game. Instead, you are tasked with taking control of certain strategic points on the map. Once you hold these points they will slowly generate command points, which you can then use to purchase re-enforcements and massive strikes. The explosion animations are amazing; watching a missile strike is simply stunning.
This game takes destruction to a new level. On one of the earlier maps you are organizing a strategic retreat from the coastline. You are ordered to employ scorched earth tactics; deny the Russians use of your resources as you retreat. You rush through town, calling air strikes on gas stations and fuel depots in a downtown American town. It’s very weird to play a game where you are watching the local Burger King burn as Russian tanks move through the rubble, firing on retreating American forces.
This game is very fun to play. It would be an easy recommendation except for the high graphics demands on a system. I have a very good system for playing PC games and my system was struggling with this game. Turning down the settings helped but unless you’re running an extreme high-end system you will run into problems running this game on full settings.
If you don’t mind running the game on lowered graphics or if you have a high-end system, then this game is the most enjoyable RTS I’ve seen in a long time.
