COURTICE -- The pre-snow rush has begun as homeowners and drivers head to the hardware store to stock up on supplies.
"They're picking up the salt, ice melter, shovels, and the snow scrapers for the car," Lisa Goodes-Furey, the owner of Goodes Hardware in Courtice, told newsdurhamregion.com Wednesday afternoon.
Ms. Goodes-Furey said about one out of every three customers coming into the store was looking for winter related supplies now that the weather forecast is calling for snow.
"It's been steady, and everybody's talking about it," Ms. Goodes-Furey said.
The snowfall was expected to begin during the rush hour.
"It might be five to 10 (centimetres) in the western section (of Durham Region) like Pickering and Oshawa," said Peter Kimbell, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada.
However, the accumulation will diminish as it heads eastward.
"Amounts are going to be the highest in . . . closest to the west end of Lake Ontario, basically," he said.
Mr. Kimbell said the one thing about winter in Canada is you never really know what's going to come next.
"For us to get snow at the end of November is not really unheard of," he said.
We're in for more snow toward the end of the week.
"In the longer term, a significant snow squall event is shaping up for Thursday and especially Thursday night and Friday" for areas closest to the Great Lakes, said a weather statement from Environment Canada.
