Tense stand-off results in arrest

Man held knife to own throat: police

Dec 03, 2008 - 11:10 AM

OSHAWA -- Police officers responding to a report of a drunk driver found themselves in a tense stand-off with a man who held a knife to his own throat Monday afternoon.

Police later learned the Oshawa man, who was arrested after a brief struggle with cops, had a lifetime driving suspension. He faces several charges after the confrontation with police at a residence in the Simcoe Street South - Hwy. 401 neighbourhood.

The incident began at about 2:45 p.m. Monday when police were told an impaired man who'd been ejected from a business in Ajax had got into a green Buick and driven off. Police tracked a suspect to the Oshawa address and as they attempted to speak to him he grabbed a knife and held it to his own throat.

Cops drew their guns as the stand-off continued. The man refused to co-operate with officers and at one point waved the knife at them, police said.

Eventually the man dropped the knife and dashed upstairs; officers handcuffed him and took him into custody after a brief struggle.

A 50-year-old Oshawa man faces numerous charges including driving while disqualified, dangerous driving, assaulting police and weapons infractions.
