Durham College delays daycare closing

Centre to stay open until Oct. 31

Jun 30, 2009 - 11:11 AM

DURHAM -- Parents with children in Durham College's early learning centre have bought more time to find a new daycare.

The college has postponed closing its early learning centre until Oct. 31 to give parents more time to secure new daycare for their kids. The facility was initially scheduled to close Sept. 1, following its regular three-week August shutdown.

The decision to keep the centre open for two months was made by Durham College president Don Lovisa and the school's senior leadership team, with support from its board of governors. The extension was announced to parents June 25 through a written notice and from staff.

Durham College made the decision to close its daycare as part of its 2009-10 budget in May, following this year's projected $280,000 deficit. The deficit has grown over the past several years.
