Catholic elementary teachers reach contract deal

Nov 17, 2008 - 02:08 PM

DURHAM -- A tentative contract agreement has been reached between the Durham Catholic board and its elementary teachers.

A ratification meeting for the 875 members of the Durham Elementary Teachers Unit of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association, is set for Monday, Nov. 24. If ratified, the school board would then consider the deal.

Board chairman Jim McCafferty said in a news release the contract is "consistent with the requirements" of a framework reached between the Province and teachers' unions.

The framework called for four-year agreements, with pay raises of three per cent a year if a board reaches a deal by Nov. 30. Boards that don't reach agreements by then will receive funding of two per cent annually.

The deal is "fair to both parties," Mr. McCafferty said.

Dan Gryzwacz, president of the Durham teachers' unit of the OECTA, agreed the tentative deal is a good one.

"In addition to the framework, we were able to put in place language that addresses some local issues," Mr. Gryzwacz said.

Contract details aren't being released until the agreement has been ratified by both sides.
