Almost 50 students switch boards

Oct 27, 2008 - 02:57 PM

DURHAM -- Following the closings of five Oshawa Catholic schools, 49 students have made the public board their new home.

A school enrolment update report, recently presented to the Durham Catholic District School Board, shows how students were affected by the closing of Canadian Martyrs, Father Francis Mahoney, Holy Cross, St. Gregory and St. Michael Catholic schools.

Of the almost 600 Junior Kindergarten to Grade 7 students impacted by the closings, 485 chose to attend their new designated school, 43 picked another Catholic school in the system, and 49 transferred to the Durham District School Board, the report states. Eight students are still unaccounted for.

As of Sept. 30, there were 24,556 students in the Catholic board - 15,604 in the elementary panel and 8,952 students in the secondary. The board had 854 fewer students than last year at the same time, but had projected losing 931.
