Catholic occasional teachers make a deal

Tentative agreement reached for 302 members

Oct 10, 2008 - 02:40 PM

DURHAM -- Durham's 302 occasional Catholic teachers have tentatively reached a new four-year contract agreement.

The deal between the Durham Catholic District School Board and the Durham unit of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association will be presented to occasional teachers for ratification on Oct. 23. Trustees will vote at their Oct. 27 board meeting.

"The board is extremely pleased to have reached its first settlement of the existing seven collective agreements which are subject to renewal under the provincial framework," said Pickering Trustee Jim McCafferty, the board's chairman. "I congratulate both negotiating committees for their collaborative approach to resolving issues of mutual interest, which resulted in a fair collective agreement consistent with the ministry of education's expectations relative to the provisions of the provincial framework agreement."

Details of the tentative settlement, which is effective Sept. 1 to Aug. 31, 2012, will be kept secret pending ratification by both parties.

"The Durham Occasional Teachers are pleased to have successfully conducted negotiations for a collective agreement which addresses local issues and enhances our working relationship with the board over the next four years," said Bill Stratton, OECTA Occasional Teachers Durham Local president.
