DURHAM -- If the public board reaches its goal, three quarters of its Grade 3 and 6 students will meet provincial literacy expectations by this June.
The Durham District School Board is aiming to have 75 per cent of all Grade 3 and 6 students obtain a Level 3 or 4 - equivalent to a B or higher, on the Education Quality and Accountability Office testing for reading and writing. Level 3 is the provincial standard.
"Our plan is an improvement plan," said Luigia Ayotte, superintendent of programs regarding the 'Literacy, Numeracy and Student Success Board Plan' for 2008/2009.
"Hopefully you've had an opportunity to go through the document cover to cover and if you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them," she said to trustees at the board's Sept. 2 standing committee meeting.
Goals also include increasing success in Grade 3, 6 and 9 math and Grade 10 literacy.
The document includes strategies and resources for success, such as literacy coaches working with teachers to plan and deliver a comprehensive literacy program for students at risk; after-school tutoring for underachieving students; and, implementing a comprehensive literacy program in all primary and junior classrooms by June 2009.
