Minor repairs made, major ones on the way

DURHAM -- Minor improvements occurred at consolidated Oshawa schools, but reports on major ones required are still on the way.
Following the Durham Catholic District School Board's May decision to close Canadian Martyrs, Father Francis Mahoney, Holy Cross, St. Gregory, and St. Michael Catholic schools, some minor improvements were made to help affected schools deal with the additional students.
The consolidated schools, John XXIII, Monsignor Philip Coffey, Sir Albert Love, St. Christopher, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Hedwig, have already had improvements completed such as portable placements, exterior painting, landscaping and, in some cases, security and barrier-free washroom upgrades, said a report presented to the school board at its Sept. 8 meeting.
Furniture, supplies and equipment from the closed schools were moved to those consolidated during the summer break. Anything not required will be reallocated this fall based on need.
Facilities services will meet with the school principals to review lists of capital upgrades and improvements, then reports will be presented to the board for approval in two phases.
The first will address increased parking needs at St. Christopher, John XXIII, and Monsignor Phillip Coffey Catholic schools. Temporary parking arrangements were made with the City of Oshawa. The phase one report should be presented to the board for early fall.
Phase two will address facility upgrades focused on program enhancements, student accommodation and building improvement requirements. That report is expected during the winter months so work can occur in the summer.
