Bully facing charges

Years of bullying lead to assault charges for teen

May 14, 2008 - 06:49

CANNINGTON -- Years of bullying that included taunting, pushing and choking have resulted in charges against a 15-year-old student in north Durham.

The Sunderland boy has been removed from Brock High School in Cannington, according to Durham police, who launched an investigation in mid-April after the boy reported being choked into unconsciousness. Further investigation revealed the 14-year-old victim had been tormented for two and a half years extending back to elementary school, police said.

The boy told police the bullying began in the form of name calling and escalated to physical violence, most often perpetrated during lunch breaks. The victim told police that in another assault the suspect had pushed him, causing him to lose balance and fall down a flight of stairs at the school.

Staff at Brock High School called police after learning of the choking incident. Charges were laid after the victim made more allegations, police said.

A 15-year-old Sunderland boy is charged with three counts of assault.
