DURHAM -- Complete with dying radiation victims and rescue teams with Geiger counters, Greenpeace activists will dramatize a nuclear meltdown at four locations across Durham Region Tuesday to pressure the provincial government to shut down the Pickering B reactors.

The protest is part of the 30km.ca campaign, which aims to highlight the evacuation radius during the Chernobyl disaster in the Ukraine in 1986.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is holding hearings Wednesday on extending the life of Pickering B. Greenpeace would rather see it shut down.

“Pickering is Canada’s oldest and most dangerous nuclear station and is only 30 kilometres from downtown Toronto. It should be shut down in 2014, not rebuilt,” said Greenpeace spokesman, Shawn-Patrick Stensil, in a prepared statement. “Regulatory authorities would never allow Pickering to be built today given the risks evidenced by Chernobyl, so they shouldn’t rebuild it either.”

Following Toronto actions on Monday, protesters will bring their message to the Pickering Civic Complex, Durham Regional Headquarters in Whitby, Oshawa City Hall and Clarington Town Hall on Tuesday.
