DURHAM REGION -- The temperature was -10 C but there was no wind and the lunar eclipse Wednesday night was just too good to miss.
Many people stopped to glance out a window from the warmth of their own home to see the celestial sight while others got braver and stepped out into the cold to watch as the earth's shadow passed over the moon.
I found myself standing on the driveway for more than a half hour watching as the moon went from bright white to a light orange-brown colour.
The eclipse began at 8:43. A bedroom window provided a good view as the first hint of the earth's shadow began to touch on the face of the moon.
But there was a feeling that I was missing something without seeing the sight against the backdrop of the entire night sky so I stepped outside onto the driveway about 9:45 p.m.. I could see the lights of planes flying high overhead and wondered what it would be like to be a pilot with a front row seat for the show.
Across the road, I could hear a neighbour who paused on the front step with a telephone in hand telling the person on the other end that she was watching the eclipse.
While it was cold the sense of wonder made it something to stay outside for and I have a few photos to show as well.
