OSHAWA -- Durham defence lawyers are refusing to go to work at the new Oshawa courthouse because they're upset they have to be searched before entering the building.

"These are officers of the court," said lawyer John Adamson.

He said the new Oshawa courthouse is the only one in Canada, other than the Supreme Court of Canada, where defence lawyers are searched prior to entering the building.

Durham Police Inspector Bruce Townley said everyone has to be searched, even police officers.

"This is a matter of public safety," he said.

The matter is being argued before a judge this morning.
