WHITBY -- The Station Gallery is inviting residents to get their creative juices flowing with the launch of a photo contest.
Anyone from the community can grab their digital camera or cellphone and take a picture that somehow incorporates the gallery's logo, either by drawing it, painting it or even digitally inserting it onto a shot.
The contest runs in conjunction with the gallery's latest art exhibition of young talented regional artists, entitled Emergence, said marketing and event manager Paige Sprecker.
"We're just giving people the opportunity to sort of emerge as their own photographer and snap a shot of friends, family or the community," she said.
"It extends our reach for local participants and people that might be interested in digital photography and digital visual art."
A jury of youth involved with the gallery will be voting on their favourites from the entries and awarding prizes for first, second and third place.
The first-place prize will be a two-hour gallery workshop for the winner and three friends in either printmaking, mixed media, bookmaking or glass pendant jewelry. Second place will receive a $100 gift certificate toward educational programs at the gallery. Third place will have their photo used as a promotional poster for one of the gallery's fall education programs.
"It's a fun opportunity to kick off the summer while so many people have digital cameras out at town events," Ms. Sprecker said, adding many residents have submitted photos they shot while meeting gallery staff at last weekend's County Town Carnival.
The gallery will also showcase the winning entries on its official website and Facebook page to allow for increased exposure.
This is the first time the gallery has held a contest of this kind, which is free to enter and open to anyone, with or without photography skills.
Participants can upload their photos directly to the Station Gallery's Facebook page or e-mail them to
stationgallery@whitby.ca. The contest runs until Sunday, July 19, at 11:59 p.m.
