Whitby taxi location in plans for change

Owners want building redeveloped

WHITBY -- One of Whitby's main taxi buildings might see changes made that will help it blend better into its downtown location.

Town staff are reviewing a site plan application that was submitted by owners of Circle Taxi to redevelop the existing establishment at 128 Brock St. N. The plan is to replace the building with a two-storey structure that will contain the taxi establishment on the main level and a two-bedroom apartment on the second level.

Councillor Sue Pitchforth, the mayor's designate on the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee, commended the building's architects for designing the proposed new structure in a "historical sympathetic" manner.

With the building located in the heart of the downtown, across the street from many bars and clubs, Mayor Pat Perkins called taxi services a crucial part of ensuring people arrive home safely.

"This is a very significant investment in our downtown and I thank you for that," she told the applicants.

"You're going to be taking one of our really old buildings and just doing all the right things and it's going to look marvellous on the main street."

Circle Taxi owners preferred not to comment on the development plans until there's more clarity into what kinds of changes will be made.
