More than 120 charges laid in drug, prostitution sweep

OSHAWA -- More than 100 drug and prostitution-related charges were laid during a five-week police crackdown in downtown Oshawa.

The initiative, which involved members of several Durham police units, saw 67 people arrested on a total of 127 charges. It came in response to concerns from residents and merchants in central Oshawa, police said.

During the sweep:

- 22 people were busted for drug possession

- charges of drug trafficking were laid against four suspects, while 11 charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking were laid

- 39 people were picked up for breaching court orders and

- 25 charges of communication for the purposes of prostitution were laid.

Police recovered drugs including oxycodone pills and cocaine.

Downtown patrols will continue, police said.
