Court appearance for man accused in wife's killing

Shooting near Lindsay launched manhunt

LINDSAY -- An Oshawa man accused of killing his estranged wife remains in custody after a brief court appearance Friday.

Jack Phillip Hale, 56, said little during his appearance in Lindsay bail court Friday as he was arraigned on a first-degree murder charge. He's also charged with break and enter and using a firearm during the commission of an offence after his estranged wife, 58-year-old Yvonne Leroux, was killed by a shotgun blast early Thursday.

Mr. Hale, clad in a grey prison jumpsuit and his legs in shackles, stood in the prisoner's box throughout his appearance before a justice of the peace. Detectives with the City of Kawartha Lakes police cleared the court of spectators and stood vigil, pistols in holsters at their hips, during the hearing, then accompanied the accused man through a door to the cells when he was remanded in custody for a week.

Mr. Hale had been the target of an intensive manhunt after the shooting, which occurred before 7 a.m. inside a trailer in a trailer park near Lindsay. Mr. Hale's red Chrysler was stopped by OPP officers on Hwy. 7 several miles east of Peterborough late Thursday afternoon and the suspect was taken into custody without incident, Kawartha Lakes police said.

Officers recovered a gun from the vehicle during the takedown, police said.

Mr. Hale is represented by Oshawa criminal lawyer Tom Balka, who wasn't in court Friday. His next appearance is in Lindsay Oct. 26, when it may be revealed if the man will seek a bail hearing. Because of the nature of the charge, a bail hearing would occur before a Superior Court judge.

Mr. Hale was ordered not to communicate with a number of people, including several people described as witnesses. Kawartha Lakes Inspector Mark Mitchell said in an interview shortly after the arrest that several people had been present at the time of the shooting.

Mr. Hale was also ordered not to communicate with Ms. Leroux's daughter and another woman, described as his ex-wife.

Ms. Leroux was a long-time employee at the Whitby Mental Health Centre. Staff members there were informed Thursday of her passing.
