Bowmanville hospital executive and surgeon leaves abruptly

Hospital corporation mum on where he's gone

BOWMANVILLE -- Less than a year after being assigned to the top executive position at Bowmanville's hospital, Dr. Mark Taylor has left Lakeridge Health Corporation.

The corporation is mum on the details surrounding Dr. Taylor's abrupt departure, which happened last week, and will not say where or whether the doctor is now employed. But, patients shouldn't notice a difference as a result, Lakeridge CEO Kevin Empey said.

"It will not affect patient care in any of the sites," Mr. Empey said.

Dr. Taylor was appointed vice president of medical affairs at the height of cost-cutting measures aimed at both saving money and replacing administrative positions with patient-care roles last February. He had been with Lakeridge since 2007, after a varied surgical and teaching career in Ontario, Manitoba and as a medical officer in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Shortly after being named vice-president, he was moved to Lakeridge Bowmanville, as the hospital corporation worked to ensure a senior management person was located in each of its hospitals.

Dr. Taylor could not be reached for comment.

As recently as last Tuesday, he was quoted in a Financial Post article about a master's health-care management program he is enrolled in and expected to graduate from this year, at Harvard University. He was identified in the article as still being affiliated with Lakeridge. The course was done largely on weekends and in summers, allowing doctors to maintain full-time jobs elsewhere, the story said.

"Part of Dr. Taylor coming to Lakeridge was that he would get support to go to Harvard," Mr. Empey said.

In the wake of his departure, Lisa Shiozaki, who joined Lakeridge as vice-president of patient care last March, will move to the Bowmanville site, Mr. Empey said. Ms. Shiozaki is a registered nurse with a master's degree in public administration. She had been working out of Lakeridge's Oshawa hospital.
