GM, CAW close to deal
OSHAWA -- A collective agreement between General Motors and unionized workers is in sight said CAW Local 222 president Chris Buckley.
“We are just trying to work out a collective agreement here and we are very, very close,” Mr. Buckley said Thursday morning.
Talks started between GM and the union on May 8. On Monday Mr. Buckley said discussions would continue until Wednesday to try to reach a deal.
“Because of our declining auto industry we have decided it makes sense to enter into early bargaining to try to negotiate a new three-year collective agreement before things get much worse in the auto industry,” said Mr. Buckley.
The meetings are in Toronto. Mr. Buckley said last week talks started with the intention of getting GM to follow the pattern agreement Ford reached May 1. However, he said he also wants GM to commit to investment for the Oshawa location “so our members have a future.”
Contract talks with GM and Chrysler continued through last night as the Canadian Auto Workers moved closer to a deal, following last week’s contract ratification with Ford, CAW president Buzz Hargrove said last night.
There are several “sticking points,” Mr. Hargrove said, without giving details, but he said negotiators, talking separately to the two companies, were close enough to expect a tentative deal today.
