'Champion for justice' to visit Uxbridge

Book reading will benefit north Durham homelessness prevention organization

May 12, 2008 - 03:11

UXBRIDGE -- An author who gets his stories first-hand from those living under bridges or sleeping in doorways will be featured at an event benefitting a north Durham organization focusing on homelessness prevention.

Author Tim Huff will visit St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, 12251 Regional Road 1 in Leaskdale, on Wednesday, June 4, at 7 p.m. While there, Mr. Huff will read from his new book entitled 'Bent Hope'.

"His stories are true, but you'd like to think they weren't," reads a release from North House. "(Mr. Huff) is a true champion for justice. He also happens to be a street poet, a missionary activist and a wide-eyed mystic who is able to discern the traces of God in the strangest of places. This book is an enticing exploration of redemptive grace-in-action on the streets of Toronto."

North House is a charitable organization that offers support and housing solutions to individuals and families in need living in Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock.

And while the homeless are not visible in north Durham as they are in cities like Toronto, the problem exists. "Many people who live in rural areas do so because they cannot afford to live in the urban areas, but the number of people who are poor in these (rural) areas will never add up in needs surveys to the numbers that are found in the urban areas," reads the release. "And yet, they still need assistance to maintain a proper standard of living... the rural needs are just as important but more widespread and often made worse by lack of transportation."

North House recently hosted a conference in Port Perry to discuss the problem of homelessness. More than 50 representatives from a variety of organizations were on hand to discuss concerns and join in workshops, according to North House. Success stories, including one about a young mother who moved into transitional housing, completed a college course and is now becoming a police officer, were collected along with suggestions from participants during the forum and a report will be created to assist all involved.

Meanwhile, Mr. Huff will be selling and signing copies of his book at the June 4 event, according to organizers. Admission is $10 at the door, with proceeds benefitting North House. For more information on the organization, visit www.northhouse.ca.
