Ice time may be an issue for Junior A team

While the chances of a Junior A franchise suiting up in Brock are good, organizers need to cross  at least one more hurdle before it's a done deal.

They need to hammer out scheduling of ice time with the Township in the coming days. Team officials -- owner Dan Fisher, general manager Mike Lubbock, and head coach Matt Lubbock -- made their pitch to council Monday night.

"We're really under the gun," explained Mike Lubbock.

The team needs to schedule at least four practices and one game a week. While the team is open to practicing in other venues, Mr. Lubbock said that the majority of home games will need to be played at the Beaverton-Thorah Community Centre, which features more seats than the facilities in Cannington and Sunderland.

"We would like to have a couple of home games in Cannington and Sunderland though," Mike Lubbock said.

All teams in the Greater Metro Hockey League play a 42-game regular season with half of those games at home. Friday nights would be the team's first choice for home games, but again, officials are willing to bend, subject to availability.

As the team's training camp -- slated for mid-August -- will be held before the ice is in at the local arenas, Matt Lubbock said they'll likely have to host it in a larger centre.

Following the presentation, council passed a resolution directing staff to work with team officials to secure ice time for the coming season.

"Your enthusiasm is very contagious," Ward 3 councillor Anthony Woodruff said.
Regional councillor John Grant said the Township should be able to accommodate the team's request.

"We've got three arenas and lots of prime ice time," he said.

Council should make a decision regarding the team at next week's meeting.
