Canada Day bigger and better in Cannington

Jun 25, 2009 - 11:50 AM

Canada Day is expected to be bigger and better than ever in Cannington this year.

The village's Lions Club has bolstered its already impressive list of July 1 events and activities centred in MacLeod Park.

The day starts with a pancake breakfast at the local Legion branch at 7:30 a.m.

The focus then shifts to the downtown core at 10 a.m. for a parade to the park. Children interested in taking part are asked to arrive at the corner by 9:30 a.m. and are encouraged to dress up or decorate their bikes with a Canada Day theme. The top entries will win a prize.

From downtown, the parade will make its way to the park, where the opening ceremonies are slated for 11 a.m.

Those in attendance can grab a piece of the giant-sized Canada Day cake before the attractions, including a midway, get into full swing at 11:30 a.m.

At noon, children's entertainer Jim Parker will kick off the action on the live entertainment stage. Other performers on tap for the day incldue Tungsten (1:15 p.m.), The Genuines (3:15 p.m.), MT Pockets (5:15 p.m.) and the headlining Blackfly Boogie Band (7:15 p.m.).

A new activity this year is Formula 67 that will allow children and their parents to create their own kit cars and race them down a specially built track. Though the race is salted for 4 p.m., kits will be available in the park throughout the day.

Other activities during the day include family games, a beer tent, an open house at the Cannington Lawn Bowling Club, a barbecue and a free movie for kids at 7:30 p.m.

And, as always, the evening wraps up with a fireworks display, which is slated for 10 p.m.
While there is no charge for any of the day's activities, donations towards the fireworks display will be welcomed.
