For his persistence, work ethic and academic record, a local student is getting $1,000 to help him with post-secondary education expenses.
Dean LeBlanc of Brock High School is this year's winner of the K.D. Monroe Scholarship, presented annually to a graduating Durham student who has a physical handicap or is visually or hearing impaired.
"Dean is an outstanding student who has demonstrated persistence and a hard work ethic to achieve an excellent academic record," said Martyn Beckett, director of education, during the Durham District School Board's June 15 meeting.
"He excels particularly in the arts and technology."
He also faces mobility challenges caused by scoliosis, a central core disease.
"As a result, gross motor skills are restricted and he uses a motorized wheelchair, requiring personal assistance for many everyday tasks," Mr. Beckett said.
Dean is an active member in his school's drama program, performing in many productions and recently holding a starring role in the school's performance of The Babbling Brooks.
"His intonation and facial expressions have been described as brilliant, allowing him to seamlessly participate in a lead role," Mr. Beckett added.
"He was diligent and professional and cared about the excellence of each performance. He became a peer leader to other members of the club."
He also was also one of the artists that contributed to the Beaverton 125 mural that was recently unveiled at the Beaverton harbour.
He'll be attending Durham College this fall, preparing for a graphic arts career.
