BOWMANVILLE -- Of the approximately dozen people displaced from their homes as a result of Tuesday's fire in Bowmanville, about half were expected to be back home soon.
"Approximately 12 people were displaced, however some will be able to go back into their residences -- they're just waiting for clearance" from fire officials, said Pauline Hopley, co-ordinator of Emergency Service with Durham Region's Social Services Department.
Two families, however, are out of their homes on a more permanent basis as a result of the blaze, which gutted a number of apartments above businesses on Bowmanville's main street.
Of those, one hadn't yet moved in to their apartment but were expected to on Thursday. So their belongings were not yet moved into the building.
The other family, though, has likely lost most of its possessions.
"I have a feeling they won't have a lot of belongings left," said Ms. Hopley.
The two families are both receiving shelter assistance, one through the Red Cross, the other through the Region.
The community has really stepped forward to help out, Ms. Hopley said, citing a number of examples, including an offer from Durham Christian High School to help with shelter and other needs. That group wasn't alone in its generosity.
"Wimpy's (Restaurant) today looked after breakfast for some of the people," she said. "Someone in the restaurant overheard the story and prepaid for lunches for them."
