OSHAWA -- Signs along highway 401 in Durham Region were lit up late Thursday with an Amber Alert after the abduction of a newborn baby from a Sudbury hospital. Police in Sudbury scheduled a 9 p.m. news conference to provide an update on the case.
A security camera image released late Thursday showed a woman carrying what appeared to be a baby wrapped in a blanket. Sudbury Police said they did not have any information indicating that the woman could be in the GTA, however, the amber alert was issued province-wide as police searched for a suspect.
The newborn was abducted from St. Joseph's Hospital in Sudbury early in the afternoon and Durham Region commuters noted the amber alert signs on the way home.
The woman being sought is not related to the baby, according to police. She was described as aboriginal, about 5' 6" tall, with a slim build, between 26 and 30 years of age. She has black hair in a pony tail and was last seen wearing white pants and a v-neck white top with black open sweater.
The newborn baby is female, caucasian. She has dark bruising on her face and dark hair. She weighs 8lbs, 11oz, and was dressed in a white flannel hospital gown and wrapped in a white blanket.
Local news outlets in Sudbury reported that more than 100 police officers were posted along area highways leading out of the city and all vehicles are being searched.
Any who sees the woman is asked to call 9-1-1.
