ORONO -- An Environment Canada team is heading to Clarington Tuesday morning, to determine if a tornado touched down Monday.
A storm damage investigation team is expected to arrive at Concession 5 near Orono, where there are reports of three downed barns and tree damage, later this morning, said Sarah Wong, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.
It's impossible to say if the storm, which hit between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Monday, was indeed a tornado, "unless we go out and assess the pattern of debris," Ms. Wong said.
"It was definitely a very stormy day. We had a very strong cold front go through, and ahead of that very strong winds kicked up, especially along the Lake Ontario shoreline."
It's not known how long it will take for Environment Canada to determine if the damage was actually caused by a tornado, or just strong winds.
"If the evidence isn't as solid, like the debris is not in a swirly pattern, it takes longer to assess," Ms. Wong said.
