AJAX -- Ajax was among the areas where at least one funnel cloud was spotted over the weekend.
Photos taken Saturday afternoon along Hwy. 2 west of Harwood Avenue show the funnel-shaped cloud looming in the distance in the western sky.
"We spotted the funnel clouds while driving west on Hwy. 2 at Harwood over the direction of Loblaws," Tina King wrote in an e-mail to newsdurhamregion.com.
Ms. King's photos show the cloud hanging from a grey sky well beyond the Loblaws Superstore.
Funnel cloud sightings were also reported late Saturday afternoon in Markham.
Peter Kimbell, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada, said Monday that a medium-size tree was knocked down by a funnel cloud spotted in the area of Hwy. 407 and Hwy. 48.
The thunderstorm cells in circulation late Saturday were nowhere near the intensity of a storm on Thursday night that spawned an F2 tornado that tore through Vaughan and Woodbridge, leaving hundreds of homes damaged.
The same storm left more than 50,000 people without power for hours in Durham Region.
Environment Canada said Sunday it had confirmed that five tornadoes touched down Thursday and two others were listed as "probable" or "possible".
Red pins on the map below are tornadoes that Environment Canada said it has confirmed. The yellow pins indicate suspected tornadoes.
