Sep 24, 2008 - 08:54 AM
SCUGOG ISLAND - A head-on collision last Friday afternoon on Island Road has claimed the lives of two men, including a Port Perry resident, and left a Janetville woman fighting for her life in a Toronto hospital.
According to Durham police, witnesses report that a blue Honda driven by a 59-year-old Port Perry man was northbound on Island Road around 12:45 p.m. on Sept. 19 when it crossed into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a black Kia.
Both the Port Perry man and a 74-year-old male passenger in the Kia from Millbrook were pronounced dead at the scene, police say.
As of Monday morning, authorities had yet to release the names of the deceased.
The driver of the Kia, a 50-year-old woman from Janetville, was airlifted to St. Michael's hospital in Toronto where she is being treated for serious, life-threatening injuries, say police.
As a result of the collision, a stretch of Island Road, south of Chandler Drive, was closed for several hours as members of the police service's collision investigation unit attended the scene to collect evidence.
Police say that weather and road conditions are not believed to be contributing factors in the collision.
Anyone who may have information regarding this collision, or who witnessed the event, is asked to contact Detective-Constable Todd Gribbons of the service's traffic services branch at 905-579-1520, extension 5225.
