The GTA is in for a drenching with up to 80 millimetres of rain expected to fall by Sunday night as the remnants of Hurricane Ike race across southern Ontario and an unrelated frontal system approaches.

The leading edge of the system will hit Saturday evening, dropping 20 to 30 millimetres onto the GTA, but it is expected to taper off later in the evening or tomorrow.

On Sunday evening Ike's leftovers are expected to drop another 50 millimetres of torrential rain.

As a result, Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for Durham Region and the GTA late Saturday afternoon.

Some areas of Southern Ontario may receive 50 to 150 millimetres of rain by Sunday evening, explained Arnold Ashton, a severe weather meteorologist at Environment Canada.
