Durham Police hosting 8th annual charity ball tournament

Sep 12, 2008 - 11:49 AM

BOWMANVILLE -- The Bowmanville detachment of Durham Regional Police will host the 8th annual charity baseball tournament and silent auction to benefit Luke's Place Support and Resource Centre later this month.

The tournament is set for Saturday, Sept. 20, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Memorial Park in Bowmanville. The tournament will include teams from Durham Regional Police, Clarington fire department, OPG Darlington Security, St. Stephen's Secondary and other local business-sponsored teams.

There will be a silent auction with sports memorabilia, gift certificates and vouchers, as well as a barbecue and other activities.

Luke's Place is named in memory of Luke Schillings, a three year old boy who, on his first unsupervised access visit, was murdered by his father in 1997 in Mitchell's Corners. The visit was allowed by the court in spite of pleas from his mother to permit supervised access only.

Luke's Place officially opened in 2003. Services have been provided since then to support the women and families who are preparing to exit or have already left an abusive relationship.

Anyone wishing to arrange pick up of donated items for the silent auction is asked to call Donna at 905-922-2028, or e-mail donna@lukesplace.ca. To donate directly to Luke's Place, forward donations to Luke's Place, PO Box 54040, 8 King St. E. , Oshawa, L1H 1A9.
