Strike mandate from Region workers

Sep 12, 2008 - 11:49 AM

DURHAM -- The Region's 400 "outside" workers have handed down a 97 per cent strike mandate to their union.

Represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1785, the employees work in areas including water treatment, sewage treatment, road maintenance and at the Region's waste transfer stations. They've been without a contract since March 31 and the union says outstanding issues include wages, benefits and job security.

"We are hopeful that the Region will come to conciliation talks with the clear intention of bargaining and addressing the outstanding issues," said Dan McGregor, president of the local. "We are keen to move bargaining forward and reach a settlement so our members can continue delivering important public services for Durham residents."

Talks are scheduled for Sept. 22.
