Live green in Ajax this weekend

Apr 15, 2008 - 02:27 PM

AJAX -- Ajax is going green this weekend.

The Town is holding Green Living Days from April 18 to 20, with a variety of events for everyone.

Tim Murphy, the Town's parks co-ordinator, told council on Monday that Green Living Days is an extension of the Ajax Environmental Affairs Week, which began 20 years ago.

On Friday, April 18, there's the 20-minute makeover, with a challenge between schools and businesses to see who can pick-up the most litter and trash. Mr. Murphy said 15 schools have registered to take part, while 32 businesses have done so.

On April 19, there's a parks clean-up and "we ask all residents take part in a clean-up of their neighbourhood park," Mr. Murphy said.

Durham Region is also doing a compost giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon (or as long as supplies last) at the Ajax Community Centre on Centennial Road. There will be tree plantings from 8 a.m. to noon along Millers Creek, north of the McLean Community Centre, and at Paulynn Park.

On Sunday, there's a Green Living Festival at the Town hall from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be displays, a native plant sale, children's activities and the chance for families to build their own bird house. A pair of workshops are also being held -- Healthy Yards at 1:30 p.m. and Conserving Energy at Home at 2:30 p.m.

At the main library branch, next to the Town hall, there will be Green Fun at the Library, with activities, games and crafts. There will also be a special reading by author Margaret Cecconet of her book 'What Ever Happened to APPLE'.
