OSHAWA-- "I'll remember her laugh and her smile," Green Party member Michael Dempsey said late Monday afternoon as he paid tribute to Pat Gostlin.
"She always had something nice to say about everyone she met. She was never judgemental. She just always tried to take everybody, look at everybody and look at the good side in them and try and build on that."
Mr. Dempsey was among a group of friends -- about a dozen in all -- who gathered at a makeshift memorial to remember the retired teacher and Green Party candidate for Oshawa.
Ms. Gostlin, 58, died early Sunday morning after her car was struck by a van at the intersection of Park Road and John Street. Police believe the driver of the van had been drinking.
"There's no reason for what happened," Ms. Gostlin's cousin Trudy Wright said.
Debris from the collision was still scattered at the intersection thirty hours after the crash.
A 25-year-old driver man faces charges of impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, and failure to remain at the scene in connection with the accident.
A justice of the peace has imposed a wide-ranging ban on publishing any details of the proceedings or the name of the accused.
