Durham College staff reach a deal to avert strike

Support staff ratify three-year agreement

Oct 03, 2008 - 10:43 AM

DURHAM -- College support staff have signed and sealed a deal, eliminating any potential for a strike this year.

Support staff at Ontario’s 24 community colleges, including Durham College, ratified a tentative deal during an Oct. 2 vote held on campuses across the province.

The 6,500 employees represented by the Ontario Public Service Employee Union perform jobs ranging from administrative work, such as doling out student loans, to IT work. Their previous contract expired Aug. 31.

The three-year deal will provide support staff with a wage increase of nearly four per cent in the first year and three per cent in each of the next two.

The agreement also includes ground-breaking language on bullying and harassment.
