AJAX -- Ajax's movie theatre was robbed at gunpoint on Saturday night.
Police say they were called to the Cineplex Odeon theatre at roughly 10:30 p.m. after a lone male suspect allegedly forced staff into the back room at gunpoint and fled with cash.
Durham police recovered the cash bag in a nearby field and used the K-9 unit to track the suspect north of the theatre. However, they were unable to find him. The money was returned to the theatre. Police now say the gun was likely a pellet or paint ball handgun. They're looking for help in identifying the suspect.
He's described as black, 5'10 with a medium build wearing a black hooded sweater, black pants and black shoes.
Anyone with information that could help identify the suspect is asked to contact Det. Jim Houston of the Robbery Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5360. Anonymous tips can be made to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) and tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.
