Students sent home at noon

AJAX -- Ajax High School has been shut down for the day.
A broken water main forced staff to send students home around noon on Wednesday, June 11.
“We’re expecting the school to be reopened tomorrow,” said Mark Joel, the Durham District School Board’s superintendent of operations and transportation.
The Bayly Street school was closed because there is no water for the washrooms, Mr. Joel said. A crew is currently digging up the main to bypass it so the school can reopen. He said they’re hoping everything will be up and running properly by Thursday morning, but if it’s not, bottled water will be brought in for the students.
The broken main occurred next to the side of the school’s building, next to the sewing room.
“It was sweating into the school,” Mr. Joel said. “It flooded out three classrooms and a hall.”
The break was noticed around 11:30 a.m.
Buses were dispatched and the school is trying to contact parents or guardians of any student under 16 years of age to let them know their child was sent home for the day, Mr. Joel said.
