DURHAM -- Thirteen people have been charged after the seizure of video machines alleged to have been used for illegal gambling at video stores in Oshawa and Whitby.
Durham police teamed up with the OPP's illegal gambling unit to execute search warrants at nine locations in early February after becoming aware of the practice. Police said that while the video terminals themselves are not illegal, what is alleged to have been done with them was: Police said paying players would accumulate credits on the machines that could be exchanged for cash.
Police seized 14 machines valued at $28,000 and charged 13 people, who are scheduled to appear in court in April.
