Police shoot deer in Pickering

Animal was in pain after collision

Oct 24, 2008 - 12:04 PM

DURHAM -- A suffering deer was put out of its misery near Blaisdale Montessori School Friday morning.

Durham Regional Police shot the deer after it was hit by a vehicle around 8:30 a.m. on Toynevale Road in Pickering.

"We did our best to manage it," said police spokesman Dave Selby. "We had to shoot the deer because it was in terrible pain."

The deer had a suspected broken back and was moaning and crying, Mr. Selby said.

"It was bad," he said.

The incident occurred in a fairly public place with a school nearby, Mr. Selby said. Police did their best to minimize the traumatic effect of the shooting by temporarily blocking off the road, parking fire trucks to prevent people from seeing the shooting and holding up a tarp. They also told people in the area what was happening.

"We're sorry for the people that have to experience that, but unfortunately it happens," he said.

From the police report, it looks like the driver of the vehicle is OK, just in shock, Mr. Selby said.
