Cops will use discretion in handing out tickets
Oct 19, 2008 - 10:33 PM
DURHAM -- Motorists in Durham Region may be in for an easy time of it thanks to a job action by Durham Regional Police.
Beginning Monday morning at 7 a.m., police will be 'exercising discretion' when it comes to handing out tickets. The move is an escalation of their job action against the Region of Durham. The job action began two weeks ago with officers refusing to don their uniform hat, opting instead for baseball caps with '10-33' embroidered on them - the signal for officer in trouble.
Two days of contract talks ended Saturday without a deal
for Durham cops. A police services board news release Saturday night said negotiations with the union ended at 4:20 p.m. without an agreement.
In a press release issued Sunday evening, Doug Cavanaugh, President of the Durham Regional Police Association, said, “It was very important to us to make every effort to resolve these issues. That’s why we stayed at the table for two full days, talking with Roger Anderson and the Police Services Board in hopes of finding some common ground. While the talks ultimately failed to produce an agreement, I’m proud to say our team did everything we could to find a compromise that would be acceptable to both sides. Unfortunately, Roger Anderson was up to his old tricks again, and appeared to be only interested in concessions and not solutions.”
Mr. Anderson was not immediately available for comment.
The union announced last week that it would escalate the job action if weekend talks failed. According to the press release, the Association will apply for conciliation Monday. Police officers are not allowed to strike.
“We had hoped to move straight to mediation-arbitration,” said Mr. Cavanaugh. “Unfortunately, Roger Anderson clearly has an agenda here, and wants to drag out and delay the process as long as possible in order to save money. Needless to say, we’re extremely disappointed and upset at the message this sends, after having worked so hard these past few weeks in the hopes that the other side would finally treat our members with the respect they deserve.”
Mention of the job action made it to Hockey Night in Canada's 'Coach's Corner' Saturday night when commentator Don Cherry displayed the '10-33' ball cap during the Toronto-Pittsburgh game. Cherry referred to members of the Association as 'my buddies'. See the clip.
The
Durham Regional Police Association represents 1,100 uniform officers
and civilian staff and has been working without a contract since
January 1.
