No deal for Durham cops after two days of talks

Job action set to escalate Monday

Oct 18, 2008 - 10:32 PM

DURHAM REGION -- Two days of contract talks have ended without a deal for Durham Region cops and the stage is now set for an escalation of job action that includes officers exercising discretion when issuing tickets.

A police services board news release Saturday night said negotiations with the union ended at 4:20 p.m. without an agreement.

Officers are already wearing ball caps while on duty and handing out information pamphlets to protest what they see as slow progress in talks and could begin exercising discretion in handing out traffic tickets beginning at 7 a.m. Monday.

The union announced last week that it would escalate the job action if weekend talks failed.

Police officers are not allowed to strike.

The Durham Regional Police Association represents 1,100 uniform officers and civilian staff and has been working without a contract since January 1.
