Local lottery winners all smiles

Oct 18, 2008 - 08:16 AM

DURHAM -- Several local residents are singing '"We're in the money" today.

They're among the winners announced this week by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.

Christopher Lowe, Pickering, won $10,000 playing Canadian Bingo. The winning ticket was purchased at Gateway Newstand located on Tapscott Road in Scarborough.

Juanita Bernard, Oshawa,  won $50,000 playing Travel Crossword. Mrs. Bernard initially thought she won $5,000 and was in disbelief when she was told she actually won $50,000.

"This will make our household much more comfortable," Mrs. Bernard, 72, said.

Mrs. Bernard is married, has 10 children, 27 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The winning ticket was purchased at Oshawa Convenience located on Simcoe Street South in Oshawa.

Louis Robichaud and Sheena Lazenka, both of Oshawa,  won a Lotto 6-49 second prize worth $143,445 from the Oct. 1 draw.

"We couldn't believe we won," Mr. Robichaud said. "We are very fortunate."

With the windfall, they plan on taking a vacation, paying off some bills and investing the rest. The winning ticket was purchased at Fan's Convenience located on Glenabbey Drive in Bowmanville.

Natalie Thomas, Whitby, won $55,910 playing Pro Pick's Pool. She realized she won after watching Monday night football.

"I didn't realize how much I actually won," Mrs. Thomas said. "I was shocked."

The winning ticket was purchased at Smokers World, located on Kingston Road in Pickering.
