OSHAWA -- Police have issued an appeal for information after a suspicious package found in a church parking lot in north Oshawa Monday afternoon was destroyed by the bomb squad.
Contents of the package, found shortly after noon at Hillsdale Wesleyan Church on the southeast corner of Ritson and Rossland roads, have been sent for forensic examination, police said. The busy intersection was closed off for several hours as police cautiously examined and then destroyed the package.
Durham's Explosive Disposal Unit was dispatched and police spokesman Dave Selby said the area was cordoned off as officers tried to determine the nature of the package.
"We've closed the intersection down as a precaution just until we find out what this (package) is," Mr. Selby said Monday afternoon.
"We're keeping cars and pedestrians out of the area as a precaution."
The package was finally destroyed at about 3:30 p.m.
Police continue to investigate and are asking the public for assistance. Anyone with information is asked to call 905-579-1520, ext. 5100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
