Ramping up Uxbridge's skatepark

No timeline yet when facility to open

By Jeff Hayward

UXBRIDGE -- Skateboard enthusiasts will have a place to practise this warm season, but when is unknown.

The ramps at Uxbridge's skatepark on Main Street North, next to the Region water treatment plant, are in "need of major repair", said Bob Ferguson, parks manager.

"The underlying plywood has rotted through and some of the support bracing has deteriorated," he noted in a report discussed by councillors May 12. Once the wood has been replaced, the 'skate lite' surface and steel plates will be re-installed on the ramps. But the timeline for the job to be completed in not known at this point, said Mr. Ferguson. The park usually opens near the beginning of May.

The Township has enlisted a contractor at a cost of $13,323 to make repairs in order for the facility to be useable.

Last year, the Main Street North park, which normally closes up in October, was shut down in August due to safety concerns related to the condition of the ramps.
