UXBRIDGE - Life may get a lot easier for residents in Uxbridge with disabilities.

Uxbridge council on April 28 adopted a Township Accessibility Report of 2006-07 and an Accessibility Plan of 2008.

The accessibility plan provides for residents with disabilities and their full participation in the identification, removal, and prevention of barriers within Uxbridge's facilities and services. The plan also strives to raise awareness throughout the community.

"The municipality has committed to continued improvement of accessibility to its facilities and services of residents, visitors and staff with disabilities and to the participation of persons with disabilities in the development and review of its accessibility plan," said deputy clerk Diana Stephen.

In past years, the Township of Uxbridge has made a commitment to remove barriers by attempting to make all facilities and services accessible to all residents.

This commitment has been shown through such things as the installation of ramps and electric door openers, curb cuts on sidewalks and installation of handicap parking areas.

Some of the proposed initiatives for 2008 include installation of an elevator or a chair lift at Town Hall, installation of automatic door openers and expansion of the entry platform at the Music Hall and to make the Township's website user friendly to all citizens, including those with disabilities.
