CLARINGTON -- Lee Bailey can't wait for the snow to finally melt, or physically be removed, from the track at Mosport because the opening weekend is drawing closer.

The annual Victoria Day Weekend from May 16-18 will once again serve as the opening for the legendary track north of Bowmanville, with a few new wrinkles thrown in to add to the excitement.

There will be one new series, another that is returning after an absence of a year, and a third that will make its debut among the major racing weekends.

"And that's just the beginning," says Bailey of the upcoming year of events at the track.

The new series is the Jetta TDI Cup, an entry level pro racing circuit that offers young drivers between the ages of 16-26 an opportunity to compete. Fans will enjoy the "developmental aspect of the series," guarantees Bailey.

Returning to the track is the Mazda MX-5 Cup, which has secured a sponsorship with Playboy for the upcoming season, that could provide some interesting promotions.

The third in the trio is the Castrol Canadian Tournament Car Championship, which has run on the track in the past, but only during the regional race dates. The series is Canadian based, run by Canadians with drivers almost exclusively Canadian, with most residing in the GTA.

One of the old favourites, the Cup Lites, will also be included in the lineup, as will the traditional display of evening fireworks.

It's no wonder Bailey gushes when he notes, "I am really excited about Victoria Day Weekend" in May. "It's a complete overhaul this year. Except for the one series, the entire lineup for that weekend has changed."

Other race dates this summer include Father's Day (June 13-15), Vintage Festival (June 20-22), Superbike Championship (July 18-20) and the Grand Prix of Mosport (Aug. 21-24).
