BROOKLIN -- Matthew Tillaart is looking forward to having a little fun this weekend.

The 25-year-old Brooklin resident will be in Toronto to take part in the Monster Energy Supercross Race at the Rogers Centre.

Tillaart says he received the call to compete some two weeks ago and he expects to see more Canadian riders like himself grace the event this weekend.

"You get racing for so long, then you get invited to things like this and I guess with the lack of interest from the American contenders that normally come up here spots were open," he says as the reason's behind him receiving the recent call to compete. "I think with the American dollar being what it is that it scared a lot of people away from coming up. So when they were looking for competitors they became a lot more focused on Canadian riders."

Having competed in high calibre events across Ontario and through eastern Canada and the northern United States, Tillaart is looking forward to driving in the Lites category this weekend.

Though he once viewed a career in the sport as an attainable goal, that time has past, he says. Now it's about the fun.

"As far as motorcross goes, when I was younger, I kind of looked at it as a career," admits Tillaart, who will be riding a four-stroke Yamaha YZ 250F bike on Saturday. "But now being 25... the age that most people turn pro now is 16. Between 16 and 20, that is kind of the gap that you can use to try and do this professionally. Now that I am 25, I kind of see this more as a hobby. As the opportunities come I just do it more for fun and try to do the best I can and not get hurt."

Though winter is generally a slow time of year for the sport, with the summer months not all that far away, things will get a little busier for Tillaart. He rides in a local club, Oshawa Competition Motorcycle Club, and competes in races every Tuesday night in nearby Claremont.

In the past Tillaart has also competed on a part time basis in the CMRC Pro Series, and says influence from his father initially got him involved in the sport.
