WHITBY -- The Whitby Dunlops have reached the halfway point in their quest to return to a third straight Allan Cup.
With a 9-4 victory over the Dundas Real McCoys in Game 2 of their Robertson Cup championship series on Sunday at Iroquois Park, the Dunlops have grabbed a 2-0 series lead and sit just two more victories away from punching their ticket to the national championship in Brantford next month.
Whitby set the tone early and never looked back on Sunday, scoring four times in the first period and four more times in the third.
Justin Cardwell and Jay McAuley each had a pair of goals, while the Dunlops also received multi-point efforts from five other players, led by the five of Ron Baker who had a goal and four helpers.
Other goals came from Peter McKellar, Mike Van Volsen, Steve Birch, Colin Baker, while Chad Ford made 24 saves for the Dunlops.
Whitby outshot Dundas by a 36-28 count and went 3-for-6 on the powerplay.
The series will shift back to Dundas for Game 3 Tuesday night and will return to Whitby on Wednesday for Game 4.
