DUNDAS – When you can score like the Whitby Dunlops can score, a game is rarely out of reach.

Such was certainly the case in Game 1 of the Robertson Cup final Thursday night in Dundas, as the Dunlops fought back from deficits of 5-1 in the first period and 7-4 in the second for a 9-7 victory over the Real McCoys.

Defenceman Bob McQuat put the finishing touch to a dramatic finish, scoring into an empty net after the Real McCoys threatened to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Jay McAuley’s second goal of the game was the winner, snapping a 7-7 tie midway through the third period.

Whitby’s top line of McAuley, Ron Baker and Peter MacKellar led the charge, as both Baker and MacKellar also scored two goals apiece.

The Dunlops trailed 5-2 through one period, but fought back to tie it at sevens through two.

Dunlops goalie Chad Ford was pulled in the first period, but came back in the second and was perfect in the third when needed most. Whitby outshot Dundas 48-34.

Game 2 of the series goes 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre.

The winner of the best-of-seven series will gain entry into the Allan Cup in Brampton, while the loser will face the Thunder Bay Hawks for one more chance at the national championship tournament.
