OSHAWA -- Charges including assault and criminal negligence have been laid against an Oshawa couple whose five-week-old daughter was hospitalized with numerous injuries several months ago.
"It's very severe," Durham police Detective Constable Pascal Labine said of the child's injuries.
The little girl was taken to hospital in Oshawa by a family member in March of this year with injuries that included a fractured skull, broken bones, bruising and brain hemorrhaging. Hospital staff alerted police upon discovering the child's array of injuries.
"They notified us immediately," Det.-Const. Labine said.
The child, now seven months old, has recovered from her physical injuries but it's not known yet if she has sustained permanent brain damage. She spent a week in hospital and has been examined regularly by doctors at Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto, Det.-Const. Labine said.
"The child is recovering well and she is developing well," he said.
The little girl has been apprehended by the Children's Aid Society and placed in foster care.
Following a months-long investigation, officers with Durham's child abuse unit arrested the child's parents Monday at their Oshawa residence. A man, 21, and a 19-year-old woman are charged with assault causing bodily harm, criminal negligence causing bodily harm and failing to provide the necessities of life.
Police have withheld the names of the accused to protect the child's identity.
The man and woman were released on bail following a hearing in Oshawa Tuesday. They've been ordered not to have any communication or contact with the infant.
Anyone with information related to the case is asked to call police at 905-579-1520, ext. 5317, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
