East Cross Conservation Area topic of May 22 community meeting

Conservation authority to hold gathering in Nestleton to provide overview of plans for land

May 15, 2008 - 11:07 AM

NESTLETON - Kawartha Conservation Authority officials will provide an update on rehabilitation efforts at the East Cross Conservation Area in Nestleton next Thursday evening.

It's expected the conservation authority's Kristie Virgoe will be on hand for the session, which will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Nestleton Community Centre, located at 3966 Hwy. 7A. She will be joined by Joyce Chau of Citizens' Environment Watch.

Throughout the evening, officials will provide updates on environmental protection, restoration and stewardship activities, trail building, volunteer opportunities and security within the East Cross Conservation Area, which is located in the southeastern corner of Scugog Township.

The project was initiated recently after many properties within the East Cross Forest area were damaged by off-road vehicles and other illegal activities. Kawartha Conservation is rehabilitating and managing the acquired lands in an effort to ensure abundant, clean water for surrounding residents and businesses, as well as to protect a variety of plant species and cold-water fish habitats.

The conservation area is closed to the public and police officers and private security guards have been patrolling the lands and laying trespassing charges.

For more information, contact Ms. Virgoe at 705-328-2271.
